A new lawn is only as good as the ground it's laid on
Turf laid directly onto poorly prepared ground will never establish properly. It may look acceptable initially — but within a season it will show the uneven surface beneath, drain poorly in wet weather, dry out and scorch in summer, and develop bare patches that are difficult to remedy. Ground preparation is not a shortcut-able part of the job: it defines how the lawn performs for years to come.
We carry out the full process: stripping existing vegetation, deep cultivation of the soil, levelling, improvement with topsoil or organic matter where needed, firming and final raking, then laying premium turf in staggered joints with all edges finished neatly. We advise on the right turf type for your garden — shade-tolerant blends for north-facing areas, hard-wearing varieties for family lawns, ornamental grades for a finer finish.
Landscaping consultation is £50 + VAT, deducted from the project cost if you proceed. We'll assess the ground, advise on turf type, and give you a full written quote.

Ground Preparation
We start by stripping the existing surface — old lawn, weeds, or bare soil — and rotovating to a depth of at least 100mm. Stones, roots and debris are removed, and levels are checked and corrected across the whole area. Where the existing soil is poor — compacted clay, heavy builder's rubble, or very sandy and free-draining — we improve it with sharp sand, topsoil or organic matter before laying. The prepared surface is firmed by treading and then finish-raked to a fine tilth ready for turf.

Turf Selection and Sourcing
We source turf fresh from specialist growers and lay it the same day it's delivered. Sitting in rolls dries the turf out and starts to kill the grass — freshness matters. We advise on the right turf type for your garden: a standard blend of ryegrass and meadow grass suits most family lawns; a shade-tolerant blend is better for areas under trees or north-facing gardens; a fine ornamental turf containing fescues and bents suits gardens where appearance leads over durability.

Turf Laying
Turf is laid in staggered brick-bond joints, starting from a straight edge and working backward across the area so we're not walking on freshly laid rolls. Each roll is butted up tightly to the next, tamped down firmly to ensure good contact with the soil beneath, and any gaps at edges or curves are filled with small pieces rather than left. Edges are cut neatly to final line using a half-moon edging iron. The finished surface is then given a light roll to improve contact.

Levelling and Lawn Reshaping
Existing lawns that have become uneven — through subsidence, mole activity, poor original preparation or gradual settling — can be relevelled without full returfing in many cases. Minor undulations are addressed by top dressing with a sand and compost mix over multiple applications, allowing existing grass to grow through. More significant humps or hollows require lifting the turf, relevelling the ground beneath, and relaying. We assess which approach is appropriate.

Seeding as an Alternative to Turf
For large areas, slopes that are difficult to turf, or where a specific grass mix is required, seeding is a practical alternative. It costs less than turf, allows a wider range of species, and produces a lawn that's indistinguishable from turfed areas once established. The trade-off is time: a seeded lawn needs keeping dry and undisturbed for 8–12 weeks. We carry out full ground preparation, seed selection and application, and advise on aftercare through the establishment period.

Aftercare and Establishment Guidance
A new lawn needs careful management through its first few weeks. Watering — particularly in dry weather — is critical in the first fortnight until the turf has rooted down. The first cut should not happen until the turf is firmly rooted and should be higher than normal to avoid stressing the new grass. We provide clear aftercare guidance on watering, first cutting, and when to start a feeding programme, and are available to answer questions through the establishment period.
