Formal Hedge Cutting
Formal hedges — box, yew, hornbeam, beech — need cutting to precise lines to maintain their structure and encourage dense, healthy growth. We cut at the correct angle to shed water, at the right time of year to avoid disturbing nesting birds, and to the right height for the species. After cutting, all faces and tops are blown down and all arisings are removed.

Overgrown Hedge Restoration
A hedge that has been left several years without cutting often needs a phased approach rather than a single hard cut. We assess the species and condition, recommend the right reduction strategy, and carry it out in stages where necessary — preventing shock and encouraging the hedge to thicken back up over the following seasons rather than producing bare, woody stems.

Ornamental Tree Pruning
Ornamental trees need regular attention to maintain their shape, encourage flowering and fruiting where relevant, and prevent crossing or rubbing branches that can introduce disease. We carry out crown thinning to improve light and airflow, crown lifting to raise the canopy above paths and borders, and deadwooding to remove hazardous limbs — all carried out to British Standard BS3998.

Conifer and Leylandii Management
Conifers and Leylandii are among the most misunderstood garden plants. They can only be cut back into green wood — cut into brown and they will not regenerate. We manage conifers carefully within these limits: reducing height by an appropriate amount, maintaining side growth, and advising clients where a conifer has outgrown what is safely manageable so decisions can be made before a problem develops.

Topiary and Shaped Hedging
Box balls, cloud-pruned yew, spiral bays and other topiary features need regular, confident shaping to maintain their form. We clip topiary by eye and by guideline depending on the complexity of the shape, ensuring clean geometric lines or naturalistic cloud forms as the situation demands. This is skilled work that most gardeners underestimate — and we take it seriously.
