A retaining wall is a structural element first, a garden feature second
Retaining walls fail when they're designed as aesthetic features rather than engineered structures. A wall holding back a significant volume of soil is subject to considerable lateral pressure, particularly when that soil is wet. Without adequate foundations, the correct wall thickness for the height being retained, proper batter (angle) and — critically — drainage behind the wall to prevent hydrostatic pressure building up, a retaining wall will eventually move or collapse.
We design and build retaining walls in natural stone, brick, reconstituted stone block, concrete block and timber sleepers. The material choice is led by the design context, the height to be retained, and the budget. Every wall we build includes adequate drainage — a rubble drain backfilled with clean stone, with weep holes or drain pipes at the base — because without drainage, even a well-built wall will eventually fail.
Landscaping consultation is £50 + VAT, deducted from the project cost if you proceed. We'll assess the site, the soil conditions, and the height to be retained before recommending an approach.

Natural Stone Retaining Walls
Dry stone and mortared natural stone retaining walls have an authenticity and permanence that no other material replicates. A well-built dry stone wall gains structural integrity from the interlock of the stone itself — through-stones, batter, and careful coursing — and can last for generations. Mortared stone walls are stronger for taller applications and allow a more precise finish. We work in local Cotswold, Malvern and Welsh stone depending on the setting and budget.

Brick Retaining Walls
Brick retaining walls suit period properties, formal gardens, and settings where the wall needs to match or complement existing brick structures on the site. We lay engineering brick or hard-fired facing brick on a concrete strip foundation, with a cavity or backfill and drainage provision behind the wall. Taller brick retaining walls may require a pier structure for lateral support — we advise on this at the design stage.

Block and Reconstituted Stone Walls
Concrete block and reconstituted stone are practical choices for larger retaining walls where cost is a significant factor or where the wall will be planted in front of. Concrete block is strong, fast to build and can be rendered or faced if a better finish is needed. Reconstituted stone walling block gives a more sympathetic appearance and comes in a range of regional colour options. Both are laid on concrete foundations with drainage provision behind.

Sleeper Retaining Walls
Timber sleeper walls work well for lower retaining walls — up to around 600mm in height — in informal and cottage garden settings. We use new oak or pressure-treated softwood sleepers on a compacted gravel base, with vertical deadman anchors driven back into the bank for walls retaining more than 300mm. Sleeper walls are not appropriate for taller retaining applications as timber will eventually rot and lose structural integrity — we advise honestly on where sleepers are and aren't the right choice.

Terracing and Multi-Level Gardens
Steeply sloping gardens in Worcestershire — particularly on the slopes of the Malvern Hills and around Broadway and Pershore — are often poorly used because the slope makes them impractical. Terracing using a series of retaining walls creates flat, usable areas at different levels, connected by steps. We design terracing schemes to make the most of the level change — creating distinct spaces for dining, planting and lawn at different heights.

Drainage Behind and Around Retaining Walls
Drainage is not optional on a retaining wall — it is structurally essential. Without it, water builds up in the retained soil and creates hydrostatic pressure that a wall cannot resist regardless of how well it's been built. We install a rubble drain or perforated land drain pipe in clean angular stone behind every wall we build, with discharge either through weep holes at the base of the wall or to an existing drainage system. This is standard on every project.
