Raised beds transform what you can grow — and how the garden looks
Raised beds solve two problems simultaneously. The first is soil: in a raised bed you control the growing medium entirely, which means heavy clay, compacted subsoil or builder's rubble stops being a limitation. The second is access: working at a raised height is easier and more comfortable, and the defined boundary of a bed makes it a more manageable, defined space to maintain.
We build raised beds in a range of materials — treated timber, reclaimed or new oak sleepers, and Cor-Ten weathering steel for a contemporary look. We advise on the right dimensions for the use case: deep for vegetables and root crops, shallower for ornamental planting, and always wide enough to reach the centre from either side. Filling with the correct growing medium is as important as the structure itself.

Timber Raised Beds
Pressure-treated timber is the most common choice for raised beds — cost-effective, practical and adaptable to any size or shape. We build beds using 75mm x 100mm or 100mm x 100mm treated timber, jointed at the corners with internal stakes driven into the ground for stability. Beds are built to the correct depth for the intended use: 250–300mm for most ornamental and salad crops, 400–450mm for deeper-rooting vegetables and fruit. All timber is food-safe grade where vegetable growing is the intention.

Oak Sleeper Raised Beds
Railway sleeper raised beds have a robust, architectural quality that works well in both formal and naturalistic garden settings. We use new oak sleepers rather than reclaimed railway sleepers, which can contain residual creosote unsuitable for food growing. New oak sleepers are chunky, attractive, and will last for many years. They're particularly effective for statement beds in prominent positions — kitchen garden entrances, courtyard gardens, and beds integrated with paving.

Cor-Ten Steel Raised Beds
Cor-Ten (weathering steel) develops a distinctive rust-coloured patina over time that stabilises and protects the steel from further corrosion. It's an increasingly popular choice for contemporary garden designs where a bold material contrast is wanted — steel beds in a gravel or paved setting, or as a contrast to soft planting. We fabricate and install Cor-Ten beds in any size, with a choice of corner finishes and heights to suit the design.

Raised Beds Preparation and Filling
We prepare and fill your raised beds with the right growing medium for what's going in them — properly graded topsoil, compost and drainage material, built up in layers so roots establish quickly and the beds hold their structure season after season. Whether it's a kitchen garden or ornamental planting, you get beds that are ready to plant into.

Kitchen Garden Design and Layout
A well-designed kitchen garden is a joy to use and to look at. We design layouts that make practical sense: wide enough paths for a wheelbarrow, beds narrow enough to reach the centre, a logical orientation for sun exposure, and space for a compost area. Where a greenhouse, cold frame or water butt is part of the plan, we incorporate them into the layout from the start rather than fitting them in as afterthoughts. We can design the full kitchen garden as part of the project.

Integrated Raised Bed Schemes
Raised beds work particularly well when integrated into wider hard landscaping — beds built into paved terraces, beds that double as seating walls with capped edges, or planting channels integrated into a deck. We design and build these integrated schemes as part of a larger landscaping project, ensuring the beds are structurally consistent with the surrounding hard landscaping in material, height and detail.
