Paving done properly starts well before the first slab is laid
A patio or driveway that fails — sunken slabs, cracked edges, puddles that won't drain, joints that weed within a season — almost always fails for the same reason: inadequate sub-base preparation. The surface material is the last decision, not the first. Getting the ground conditions, falls, drainage and bedding layer right is what makes the difference between paving that lasts twenty years and paving that needs attention within two.
We carry out the full project: excavation, sub-base, edging, laying, jointing and finishing. We advise on material choice based on how you will actually use the space — natural stone for patios where the look leads, porcelain where you want a contemporary finish that stays low-maintenance, block paving where flexibility and repairability matter. Every project is quoted in full with no hidden extras.
Landscaping consultation is £50 + VAT, deducted from the project cost if you proceed. This covers a site visit, design discussion, material recommendations and a full written quote.

Natural Stone Paving
Natural stone — sandstone, limestone, slate, granite and travertine — remains the premium choice for patios and garden paths because no two pieces are identical and the surface improves with age. We source quality stone and lay it on a full mortar bed over a properly compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base, with joints pointed in an appropriate mortar mix or polymeric sand depending on the stone and the setting. Falls are designed in from the outset to ensure water drains away from the house.

Porcelain Paving
Large-format porcelain tiles have become a popular choice for contemporary patios and garden spaces. They are highly durable, frost-resistant, non-porous and very low maintenance. We lay porcelain on a full mortar bed using the correct flexible adhesive, with careful attention to joint widths and alignment. Porcelain requires precise cutting equipment and experienced handling — poorly laid porcelain cracks at the edges and lifts in frost. We do it correctly.

Block Paving
Block paving is the practical choice for driveways and areas that need to bear vehicular loads or allow for flexible repair. Individual blocks can be lifted and relaid if services need accessing beneath, making it more adaptable than a rigid surface. We lay block paving on a compacted sub-base with a sand laying course, using edging restraints to prevent spread, and compact the blocks in to lock them together. Pattern, colour and border detailing are discussed and agreed before any work begins.

Paths and Steps
Garden paths and steps are both functional and aesthetic elements of a well-designed outdoor space. We construct paths in natural stone, gravel, sett or stepping stone formats depending on the style of the garden and the use they'll receive. Steps are built in stone or sleeper construction with correctly proportioned risers and treads — too steep and they feel uncomfortable; too shallow and they become a trip hazard. We get this right.

Edging, Drainage and Finishing
Good paving projects don't end at the last slab. Edge restraints prevent the surface from spreading outward over time. Channel drains and gullies are positioned to intercept water before it reaches the house or pools on the surface. Existing drainage connections are checked and extended where needed. All edges are cleaned down, surplus material removed from site, and the finished surface is inspected before we leave.
